Former Reading goalkeeper Sam Walker has joined Charlton Athletic on a deal until January, just days before the Royals play the Addicks.

Michael Appleton's side are unbeaten in six matches while the Royals have not won on their travels since December 2022.

32-year-old Walker joined Reading in 2018 and he played 14 times before departing in 2021.

Playing nine times in his debut season and another seven in the following campaign, he spent the entirety of his final campaign on loan.

He had formerly made his name in the Chelsea Academy but played over 160 times in five years with Colchester United.

Upon leaving Berkshire, he has appeared for Blackpool, AFC Wimbledon and Kilmarnock.

Speaking to the club, Walker said: “I'm delighted. I've been keeping myself sharp and ready for the right opportunity and this feels good. I spoke with Stephen Henderson and obviously, Harry [Isted] is out for a little bit so they need a bit of cover and someone to come in.

“I feel ready to contribute to the squad who are obviously going really well at the moment. I know a couple of the lads anyway, so I've come in and fitted in nicely. I'm looking forward to contributing to the team.”
