Reading fell to their second successive league defeat, flattering to deceive in front of goal in a 1-0 loss at Port Vale.

Take a look at the ratings below.

Reading Chronicle:

David Button, 6: Had little to do on his debut, but had a few shaky moments. Spilt a long shot which required a last-ditch clearance from Tom Holmes, and was caught flat-footed for Vale's deflected winning goal.

Andy Yiadom, 6: Looked comfortable in a solid first half, but faded in the second period as Reading dropped off onto the back foot.

Tom Holmes, 5: Caught out a few times with balls over the top and needed to do better with Ben Garrity's winner. Very disappointing showing.

Tom McIntyre, 5: Similar to Holmes, a poor showing from the homegrown favourite. Looked okay in the first half but once the side fell behind the Scotland youth international looked lost and struggled massively.

Nesta Guinness-Walker, 6: A really impressive first-half performance from the full-back, particularly going forward. Winning a first-half penalty, which Andy Carroll failed to convert, there are still question marks defensively.

Reading Chronicle:

Charlie Savage, 6: Showed a great range of passing and helped dictate the flow of the game in the first half. As the whole team did, the 20-year-old fell off in the second half and was substituted midway through.

Sam Hutchinson, 5: Looked leggy and lost as the game went on, despite his vast experience. Continually dropped into the back four in the second half, losing a midfield option.

Femi Azeez, 5: Nothing the winger tried came off. A very bad day at the office for the youngster.

Harvey Knibbs, 6: His energy and ability to win the ball back high was impressive. However, the 24-year-old failed to create any chances for the team, who remained toothless throughout.

Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan, 5: Linked up well with the midfield but it is hard to judge a striker when they have no chances to score. Disappointing after such a positive action in midweek's 4-0 win over Millwall.

Andy Carroll, 4: Failing to convert the penalty, the former England star was too busy wrestling the defence to positively contribute to the team. Had no support from the referee, who gave Carroll nothing all afternoon, but had expected more from the veteran forward.

Reading Chronicle:

Substitution

Caylan Vickers, 5: The teenager was bullied by the wily Port Vale defence. Failed to impact the game in his 30 minutes of pitch time, but still a youngster with bags of potential.

Mamadi Camara, 6: Similar to Vickers, the winger had little impact on the game. Willing to take hold of the ball and attempt to beat his marker, which was positive.

Lewis Wing, 5: Struggled to get up to speed with the game, but almost scored an equaliser in stoppage time when his cross-cum-shot hit the crossbar.

Matthew Carson, 5: Beaten too easily on his flank, but was positive and looked to get forward.
