Reading youngster Nelson Abbey could hardly contain his pride after captaining his boyhood club to a 4-0 win over Millwall on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old is born and raised in Woodley and has been with the club since a young age.

Making five professional appearances for the Royals, the centre-back was skipper as Ruben Selles picked up his first win as manager at the Den.

Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan, Mamadi Camara and Charlie Savage all scored as a Reading team with an average age of just 21 cruised to victory over a full-strength Lions team in the Carabao Cup.

Taking to social media after the win in South-East London, the teenager started with: "Firstly I wanna thank everyone who came down to support. You were excellent. I’ve been at Reading my whole life, I’ve grown up here, it’s all I know. Today was a brilliant performance from the whole squad and I couldn’t be more proud. Especially to captain my boyhood club. Urzz!"

He followed it up with a simple four word message to sum up his pride: "My Town, My Club."

The youngsters have laid down the gauntlet to the experienced first teamers to perform at Port Vale on Saturday, with the Academy stars eager to take their place in the spotlight.

Six of the starting side were products of the club's esteemed Academy system, while another two featured off of the bench.

Both Ehibhatiomhan and Camara have been regulars under Under-23 boss- and club legend Noel Hunt- for over two years as the club battled back to earn Category One status after a one-year stint as Category Two.

Taking to social media himself, Hunt was a proud manager at full-time.

"What a fantastic performance and result from every single player tonight," he said. "A proud moment for the Academy to see so many of its boys the pitch together! And an amazing 1st win for the Gaffer and staff, Hats off too all involved."
