Reading fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to Peterborough United in Ruben Selles' first match in charge.

Here is what the Spaniard had to say after the match.

Selles on the game

We don’t like the defeat; we don’t like that feeling. But having had a challenging summer, I think we showed today that we are a good team. We showed a good performance and showed what we can do. We need to grow the idea and we need to use this game as a booster to boost the identity we want to find. We knew it was going to be difficult, but I think we had some good moments in the game.

The first 30-35 minutes we were very intense and we knew what to do in possession and in transition. We are playing a good team with very good front players that can cause you damage. We need to be better defending those crosses and then we went into self-protect mode with a bit of too many long balls and deeper in the defence. We arranged that in the second half and went higher in the pitch and when you are chasing the game you can concede a few chances, but I think we created chances.

Selles on impact of youngsters

When I tell you, I’m not lying. They are working well and putting 100 per cent it’s because they are doing it. I have no doubts they can make an impact, especially the ones coming on at the end. Speed and tempo we needed back again in the last 15 minutes and that’s what they did. Hopefully we can get better and better.

Selles on Sam Smith injury

Sam is going to be around six weeks out. We made a new scan and there was some blood there so he will be out for the first six weeks. We still have good availability of the squad, one of the highest I had in my career, but we are missing some because of the problems.
