A TODDLER has been given the world’s smallest 3D printed prosthetic hand by his tech-savvy dad.

Oakley Lynch, who was born without his right hand, has been fitted with the prosthetic just before his second birthday.

The miniature hand, with gripping fingers, cost around £30 to make instead of the usual cost which can be more than £10,000.

Greg and Tori Lynch discovered their son would be born with one hand at the 16 week scan.

The school sweethearts said they were prepared when their first son was born.

Oakley is fully capable with his shortened arm and often chooses not to wear a prosthetic.

“He was given a NHS prosthetic at six months but never wore it, it was basically a dolls hand and doesn’t have any function,” said Tori.

“He outgrew it at 18 months and we got him an upgraded one, it sits amongst his toys. We’re very relaxed and don’t make him wear it because it’s a hindrance.

“All the men in his family are really technologically minded. A lot work in product design and construction. They follow the development of prosthetic technology.

“They love taking things apart and building things. Oakley has shown signs of following in their footsteps.

“My husband has made him a 3D prosthetic hand that’s functional, when he bends his elbow the fingers grip.

“He’s a bit young to use it properly, the people that designed it don’t usually make them until the children are five.”

Online charity e-NABLING, based in America offer designs for 3D printed prosthetic that Greg tweaked for his son.

Tori added e-NABLING had told them it was the smallest 3D printed prosthetic in the world and the couple have since made two other hands for Oakley’s friends.

The Earley couple, who have been married for four years, also have new arrival Huxley, who is just nine-months.

The charity is run by volunteers and say they are a global volunteer movement aiming to help thousands of people across the world.

To date they have delivered 1,800 hands, most of them to children.

Tori said they may customise the prosthetic hand if Oakley wants to wear it to school saying a spiderman or superhero themed prosthetic could be a possibility.

A heart-warming video of Oakley trying out his new hand has taken the web by storm, being viewed by thousands of times.

Oakley has his own Instagram page at www.instagram.com/myoakley doakley where he has been followed by celebrities including Sia and Zooey Deschanel.

Oakley’s Instagram page has more than 25,000 followers form across the globe and Tori posts updates and pictures of her son as he grows up.
