One of Reading’s M4 junctions and a main route into and out of town is set for road closures for resurfacing.

Reading Borough Council has announced that the M4 junction 11 and the A33 up to its junction with Island Road will be closed so that the route can be resurfaced and have new road markings added.

Lane closures will be in force at Junction 11 between 8pm and 6am each night for four nights from today (Tuesday, September 5).

Meanwhile, the A33 will be closed in sections in one direction at a time, between 7pm and 6am the following morning from Tuesday as well.

Drivers will need to follow diversions at these times.

The work is being undertaken as the M4 Junction 11 and the A33 are part of a strategically important diversion route during closures of the M4.

The council has touted the methods that will be used while work takes place, with road markings being established using a ‘low carbon application method’ and the roads being restored using rhinophalt which preserves, protects and extends the life of the asphalt.

John Ennis (Labour, Southcote) lead councillor for climate strategy and Transport, said: “We are making use of cost-effective innovations and modern techniques to keep the road surface of this busy arterial route in good condition for longer.

“While this is a significant amount of work and there will inevitably be some disruption, it is being carried out through the night to keep disruption to a minimum.

“We are committed to improving the overall condition of the highway network.”

The work has been made possible through the council’s capital fund for Residential Roads, with £9 million being spent over three years from 2020 to 2023, with a further £8 million investment planned over the next five years from now to 2028.

National Highways has provided £250,000 this financial year as the route is deemed strategically important as a diversion route during closures of the M4.

Another £250,000 will be provided by National Highways next financial year 2024/25.

The council’s highways department revealed what projects it would undertake to maintain the strategic M4 diversion route at a meeting of the council’s housing, neighbourhoods and leisure committee earlier this year.

The projects include road marking improvements on the A33 from the M4 junction 11 to its junction with Rose Kiln Lane, resurfacing Rose Kiln Lane between the A33 and Berkeley Avenue, and resurfacing and retexturing of stretches of the A4 Bath Road.

The strategic M4 diversion route utilises the A33 and the A4 so diverted drivers can get between junctions 11 and 12.
