Thick smoke could be seen over Tilehurst last night after a fire broke out in a derelict building.

Just before 10pm on Monday, May 29, the fire service received a report of a fire in Thurso Close.

Crews from Caversham Road, Theale and Wokingham Road Fire Stations were sent to the scene, along with the Aerial Ladder Platform (ALP) from Whitley Wood Fire Station.

A Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Upon arrival, crews found a fire affecting the first floor and roof space of a derelict building.

"Two fire crews wearing breathing apparatus used two water jets to extinguish the fire.

"Crews remained at the scene to dampen down and check for fire spread and the property was re-inspected the following morning."

Fire crews were on the scene for approximately two hours and 45 minutes.

It comes just weeks after a fire broke out in a residential property on the same road.

On April 29, Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service crews were called out to an incident on Thurso Close, Tilehurst, at around 9pm where a fire had started in a first-floor flat before spreading to the roof.

The fire took crews three hours and 20 minutes to put out and an investigation was launched into the cause.
