A RALLYING cry to jobseekers has come from Reading Borough Council as it is currently on the look out for staff to fill more than 80 job vacancies.

The council currently has 88 vacancies which cover a variety of different roles.

Examples of positions it is hiring for include a respite care support worker, a solicitor for its adult social care and education department, and an approved mental health professional.

It is also on the look out debt recovery officers and teaching assistant staff for a number of schools across Reading.

A review and rules and working conditions for staff was recently confirmed at a council personnel committee meeting on Thursday, November 17.

Three policies were agreed at the meeting: the Employment Stability Agreement, Trade Union Facilities Agreement and Annual Leave Policy.

The employment stability agreement lays out what actions the council will try to take to limit redundancies.

The union facilities agreement lays out what rights trade union representatives have, with the council funding three union secretaries:

  • Staff Side Secretary (Unison)
  • Joint Shop Stewards Committee Secretary (Unite)
  •  Education and Community Panel Secretary (NEU)

Some employees are entitled to more annual leave than others.

While lower level staff and tradespeople are entitled to 25 days off, senior management and directors are allowed 31 days off.

Lower level staff who’ve been with the council for five years can get 30 days off, then 33 days if they’ve served for 10 years plus.

Jason Brock, the council leader (Labour, Southcote) said these policies make the council an “exemplar” employee in Reading.

The council currently employs 1,573 people.
