One of Reading’s MPs has congratulated Liz Truss on becoming Prime Minister.

Mrs Truss, the MP for South West Norfolk, won the election to become the Conservative party leader and by extension the next Prime Minister yesterday (Monday, September 5).

She won the contest with 81,326 votes to runner up Rishi Sunak’s 60,399, in a ballot reserved for Conservative party members.

Reacting to the news, Alok Sharma, the Conservative MP for Reading West, said: “Congratulations to Lizz Truss on her election as Conservative Party Leader and the next Prime Minister.

“Now to unite and deliver for the UK.” 

His congratulations were made on Twitter, where Mr Sharma regularly tweets about is exploits as the COP 26 President.

Mr Sharma was in Rotterdam, The Netherlands when the news of Mrs Truss’ win was announced.

He was there to deliver an address at the opening ceremony of the Africa Adaptation Summit, where world leaders have met to discuss how African nations can reduce carbon emissions, ahead of the COP 27 conference in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt this November. 

Mr Sharma has also visited Indonesia and Vietnam recently, two places he has already been to earlier this year.

In the first quarter of 2022 (January to March), the Local Democracy Reporting Service revealed that Mr Sharma visited seven countries and racked up an estimated total of 34,696 air miles.

Figures for the second quarter of 2022 (April to June) have not been revealed yet.
