An annual charity golf day is making a return next week to raise vital funds to support Sue Ryder’s palliative care services in the Thames Valley.

The Sue Ryder Cup, which is now in its third year, will be held at Sonning Golf Club on Friday, August 5, with all proceeds going to support Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice in Reading and Sue Ryder Palliative Care Hub South Oxfordshire.

Teeing off at 11am, the tournament will start with coffee and bacon rolls, before golfers in teams of two play 18 holes in a four-ball format with full handicap, as per the rules of the Ryder Cup competition.

On the 17th hole they will have the opportunity to make a donation and try to ‘beat the pensioner’ and win a prize. Prizes will also be given for the longest drive and the ball that falls nearest the pin.

The day will finish with the prize-giving ceremony, where the winning team will be presented with the coveted Sue Ryder Cup, followed by a dinner at the clubhouse.

The fundraising event is organised by Geoff Knight from Wargrave, who has supported Sue Ryder for many years after two of his friends received care from the charity at the end of their lives.

Mr Knight said: “The Sue Ryder Cup is a chance to enjoy the fun and excitement of playing in a Ryder Cup competition on one of the most beautiful courses in the South of England and, while doing so, raise much needed funds for a wonderful cause.

"Over the past few years charities such as Sue Ryder have experienced tough times due to the COVID-19 pandemic and this year it’s more important than ever for us to maximise our fundraising. Most of our spaces for golfers are now filled, but we’d love to hear from local businesses or organisations who would like to get involved by becoming a sponsor.”

There are a range of sponsorship opportunities – big or small - available for local businesses, including sponsoring a hole for £120, or contributing towards prizes. This will include benefits in return such as a corporate stand displayed on the day and a mention in the event programme.
